A fast paced, gritty murder mystery through the wilds of territorial New Mexico's Rio Grande Valley with the feel of a Tony Hillerman novel and the complexity of a Ngaio Marsh mystery. Pueblos, Apache, former Mexican citizens and the US Army collide in a tale of greed and murder. A new civil war mystery series by best selling author Phillip and Jennifer Bryant.

Peter Thomas Smith's days on the post of Fort Craig, New Mexico territory, are spent fighting boredom, keeping cool, and giving the spiritual state of the 5th California Mounted Infantry volunteers a ready ear. As chaplain, he isn't asked to do much in the way of fighting Apaches and there have been no wounded in battle to tend to from fighting Confederates.

He is content to let this state of affairs continue, that is until the Piro scout, Tafoya, brings in a soldier half dead with no name, no unit, and no reason for being there. Like his preferred namesake before him, Thomas the doubter, there are too many questions to ignore.

The story is well conceived and written. It brings to mind the cowboy stories of yesteryear, when evil and Apache lurk, but Truth, Justice and the American way prevail in the end. The only thing I found slightly jarring was the price of silver during the Civil War. I thoroughly enjoyed the read, and look forward to more stories from Mr Bryant.

Death Confessor A Civil War Murder Mystery eBook Phillip Bryant Jennifer Bryant Reviews

I thought the story line was dragging along and the use of spanish left me unable to understand all of the words.
I liked the history, seemed realistic and factual. Plot was not really deep or thought provoking. There was a lot of Spanish language that could have been translated more, I feel I missed somethings because of it.
Wonderful crime novel. Set in the west during the War of Northern Aggression where not much is known about the men and their lifestyle while guarding the frontier. I recommend this book to everyone.
I suppose that if the author is considering writing a series, then the subtitle is necessary. However, most readers will expect something quite different. Set in the far west, and being about a lost treasure, it was not what I expected. Nonetheless, the characters were interesting and the conclusion surprising.
This is a good read of mystery and suspense that takes readers back in time. The year is 1863 and the country is much different as a war between the north and south is being fought. In the west, things are different too, but some things never change. As Phillip Thomas Smith finds out when a man asks to confess before he dies. Thomas is not a priest but hears a strange confession of murder and the mystery begins.
The subtitle is a Civil War mystery but that is only because that is the era when this story takes place. That aside this is an interesting mystery from New Mexico army fort...now in ruins. A chaplain hears the confession of a dying soldier who confesses to a murder as no priest was available. The mystery of who was murdered is eventually solved in satisfactory fashion.
I will try to finish this book. The author tried so hard to get the details right I feel I owe him that. But I took a break when I couldn't stand it anymore and the break has lasted through two other books. Nothing in the first half of the book made me care about the characters and I know more about their dreary lives than I care to.
